Nowadays, it is so easy and quick to obtain coffee and other drinks. They can be simply put in either paper cups or disposable plastic containers. But have you ever thought of bringing your very own travel mug to your favorite local coffee shop?

The idea of bringing your own travel mug for your favourite beverage may sound bothersome and inconvenient but it’s nothing of the sort. Instead of accepting your barista’s throwaway cups, you can say no and use your reusable mug which can potentially help reduce plastic waste. Surprisingly, most reusable travel mugs are designed to fit into a coffee shop’s coffee maker machine.

Undoubtedly, travel mugs are the perfect alternative to single-use coffee cups. But who can refuse the convenience of disposable cups? Well, everyone can if we try.

Disposable cups are usually made from plastic or paper. An estimated 2.5 billion disposable cups are used annually in the UK alone. And only a measly 1% of these cups are recycled. So what happens to the 99%? Well, they either go straight to landfills, left buried there for a long time, get incinerated or end up floating in bodies of water. They are also behind the death of some sea animals such as whales and turtles.

Paper cups are not eco-friendly either because they are covered with a material called polyethylene which keeps your beverages warm and also prevents them from being recycled. Furthermore, when polyethylene is heated, it could potentially leach a toxic metalloid into your coffee known as antimony.

Additionally, a lot of trees are being cut down to make paper. A billion gallons of water are being consumed and wasted. That is so not good when it comes to our natural resources.

Travel mugs, on the other hand, are made from stainless steel, silicone or glass. These materials are eco-friendly, recyclable and make them durable enough to last for a few years with proper care. Travel mugs encourage a better and greener environment. Although energy is still used in making them and for their maintenance like washing, these mugs are reusable for a longer period of time. A travel mug is durable and made free from harmful chemicals.

These reusable travel mugs are safer choices compared to disposable cups. Because almost anything related to plastics are carcinogenic. Travel mugs do not even alter the taste or flavor of your drink. No leaching unlike disposables

Most travel mugs feature double-walled vacuum interior with thermal insulation that makes them very easy and safe to switch from hot to cold drinks. Unlike plastic cups, no nasty chemicals can leach into your drink that are totally unsafe for human health.

Now, imagine using the same travel mug years from now. Imagine everyone doing the same thing. The environment will surely be protected. No trash, cleaner air and fresher water.

As mentioned, some disposable cups are incinerated which can emit dangerous gases into our atmosphere. Thus, reusing travel mugs instead of buying disposable cups could help prevent climate change and carbon footprint. The world is dying but we can make a significant difference by simply switching to sustainable living and going green. Keep in mind that it is not advisable to reuse plastic materials.

Travel mugs can change the perception of portability, convenience and safety. They don’t just save money but they help protect the environment as well. Afterall, we still want the future generation to live comfortably and safely. A greener environment with a wise alternative perhaps. It’s just a matter of can do attitude.
